Stop The Presses!
Tuesday, September 4, 2007 at 08:47PM Larry Craig is said to be re-considering his resignation:
"It's not such a foregone conclusion anymore, that the only thing he could do was resign," Sidney Smith, Craig's spokesman in Idaho's capital, told The Associated Press.
"We're still preparing as if Senator Craig will resign Sept. 30, but the outcome of the legal case in Minnesota and the ethics investigation will have an impact on whether we're able to stay in the fight—and stay in the Senate," Smith said.
"Mortimer, we're back!" Seriously though, I hope Senator Craig considers that, even if he were to prevail in court, Americans in general and Idahoans in particular will forever have the image of him tapping his toe and taking a "wide stance" emblazoned in their minds. I don't think he can ever overcome the "ewwwww" factor. He needs to follow through on his resignation. Update: According to On the Record with Greta Van Susteren, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell considers this matter as being "over." The number two ranking House Republican, Roy Blunt, has stated that once you plead guilty the presumption of innocence is over. The Republican Governor of Idaho is also reportedly upset with Craig's decision to reconsider. It was also mentioned that Larry Craig is fighting an uphill battle to even get into court prior to his stated resignation date of September 30. If he persists, Larry Craig will go from a tragic figure to a despised figure among his colleagues. He needs to resign.
