The End Draws Near For Bolton
Monday, December 4, 2006 at 09:51AM The impending resignation of U.N. Ambassador John Bolton because a handful of bloviating, self-absorbed Senators refuse to give him an up-or-down vote is a travesty. It also signals that the Senators in question have little to no imagination or vision with regard to what needs to be done to remedy the dysfunction of the U.N. The decision of some Republican members to block a floor vote when a majority of the Senate supports Bolton is absolutely unforgivable and underscores the flaws that exist within the Republican Caucus that contributed to their defeat.
I find it especially amusing, however, that Rhode Island Republican Senator Lincoln Chafee was one of the most outspoken critics of Bolton, yet lost his bid for reelection anyway. If he believed that opposing the administration's nominee would somehow insulate him from the anti-Bush and anti-Republican tide in Rhode Island, he badly miscalculated. It couldn't have happened to a better guy.
I don't blame Bolton for apparently passing on other opportunities to continue in his role. He is probably growing weary of the lack of full cooperation from the Senate and has decided to wash his hands on the whole thing.
