The Boston Globe Fails At The Gotcha Game
Saturday, December 2, 2006 at 10:15AM I thought I'd weigh in on the supposed "story" regarding the landscaping company hired by Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. The Boston Globe is in a tizzy because the company's owner hired several illegal aliens. In the world of the Globe, this somehow makes Romney, who has been increasingly critical of immigration policy, a hypocrite.
Here is where the Globe errs. Romney hired a company run by a legal immigrant. The Governor is not responsible for checking the citizenship status of everyone hired by the company's owner. Therefore, Romney is no more guilty of retaining the services of illegal aliens than he would be guilty if one of the employees was discovered to have committed a past murder. Either way, Romney didn't know and it wasn't his responsibility to find out.
If anything, the decision by the Globe to run this story begs the question as to whether the Globe supports a policy that would severely penalize companies for hiring illegals. After all, besides the federal government, the most appropriate and realistic entity to ascertain the status of a worker would be a prospective employer. If the Globe doesn't support such a policy, then the only hypocrisy would be that demonstrated by the Boston Globe for criticizing Romney for something for which they wouldn't even hold the actual business owner accountable.
