Nasty!
Friday, December 1, 2006 at 09:33AM Today is quickly turning into one of those days where your best laid plans are torn asunder. Many of you non-midwesterners may be seeing stories about the ferocious winter storm hitting the midwest. Let me tell you...it's bad. The freezing rain began yesterday afternoon and remained fairly steady into the night. The snow began falling at around 3 a.m. and is still coming down. I heard one report that approximately seventy-five percent of the roads in Illinois are covered in snow. In my area we have lots of black ice and power outages. Fortunately my power is up and running, but others are not so lucky. It's not the best time to be without heat.
I was scheduled to travel to Chicago later today, but on the way to work my car ended up stuck in the snow a block from my home. I walked back to my garage, grabbed a shovel and started digging the tires out. With the help of a very kind soul I was able to free the car, but drove it straight back home. It seemed kind of foolish to press my luck. Needless to say, the Chicago trip is officially off. Mrs. Scottish Right is home today too, along with Scottish Right the Younger. Scottish Right the Younger was openly rooting for school to be closed yesterday. While that didn't happen, he's in a state of prepubescent bliss today, eagerly donning his winter clothes and trapsing out into the white stuff. Mrs. Scottish Right and I are just hunkering down until later this afternoon when the snow is predicted to subside after dumping an estimated six to ten inches. At that point we will commence the process of digging out. Yay! It's hard to believe that just a couple of days ago the temperature was in the sixties. This all just begs the question...why don't I live in the South?
How long until the global warming crowd hits the airwaves and tries to convince everyone that this wintry weather is more evidence of global warming? See, even in a post about the weather and how it's disrupting my day, I had to get my little dig in! Isn't blogging grand?
Update: Scottish Right the Younger has retreated from the cold and is now sprawled out on the couch with a heating pad over his legs trying to get warm. Foolish, foolish, impetuous youth. Ah, those were the days!
Update: It's finally stopped snowing in my area. The Illinois Department of Transportation has verified that 75% of Illinois' roads are covered with snow.
