Why "Scottish Right?" Why not a more contemporary-alternative alliteration like "Pugnacious Pickles" or perhaps something cute like "Dithering Monkeys?"
The first reason, I suppose, is that I don't find either of those names appealing. Neither is "Scottish Right" a reference to anything Masonic in nature, although I admit to being intrigued by the dual reference. The real reason for calling this the "Scottish Right" blog is because those two words seem to fully encapsulate what is anticipated to fill the content of the posts. Not to mention that I myself am of Scottish descent.
This should not be interpreted as meaning that the blog will be about Scotland, because that too would be a mistaken conclusion. What it will be about, in a manner of speaking, are certain traits, characteristics and ideas that, while certainly not unique to them alone, have been ensconced in the nature of the Scots themselves as they participated in the historical drama. Traits like thriftiness, fierce independence, courage of conviction, reserve, practicality, dutifulness and loyalty. In other words, the basic traits that also embody the social, economic and political conservatism of the "right" and whose influence can best be summarized by the following excerpt from Arthur Herman's book How The Scots Invented the Modern World:
...being Scottish is more than just a matter of nationality or place of origin or clan or even culture. It is also a state of mind, a way of viewing the world and our place in it. This Scottish mentality was a deliberate creation, although it was conceived by many minds and carried out by many hands. It is a self-consciously modern view, so deeply rooted in the assumptions and institutions that govern our lives today that we often miss its significance, not to mention its origin. From this point of view, a large part of the world turns out to be "Scottish" without realizing it.
